Our Young Scientist!!!

Behind Beau you can see hundreds and hundreds of science fair projects.

Beau completed a science fair project for his 6th grade class in Feb. This was only the 2nd science fair project he has done. His project was on the effects of driving distractions. He used the Wii Mario Kart game for his driving scenarios. He established a base time and then completed the same course with various distractions, ie. eating, drinking, talking on the cell phone, talking with friends, and while being sleep deprived, to get comparison times. It was quite interesting. He won 1st place for his grade and that qualified his project to go to SARSEF, the Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair, held downtown at the Tucson Convention Center. There were at least a couple thousand projects. This fair was for elementary, middle school and high school students from all over southern Arizona. The projects were separated into two divisions, k-5th grade and 6th-12th grade. There were many, many categories, some that I didn't even understand. We were notified on Thur. that Beau had won... something, we wouldn't know exactly what until the award ceremony on Friday night. As we sat at the ceremony anxiously waiting to hear Beau's name called, we heard about so many extraordinary projects that these kids had completed, some on topics that I had never even heard about. Some of the students had competed at SARSEF 6 and 7 times. There are some super smart kids out there! The awards varied from certificates to gift bags and cards, trophies, money and college scholarships. OK, OK...enough detail and suspense...Beau won 2nd place in the behavioral/social science category! He won a trophy and $50! He was so excited and proud! We hope that this sparks his interest in science and after seeing so many quality projects, he will put some real thought into his project for next year. We are so proud of you Beau!

That is way cool - not bad at all for only the 2nd time around. And $50 - awesome.
